School Council

At Godmanchester Community Academy, we believe that pupil voice is an important part of school life — helping children understand democracy, responsibility, and the value of working together to make a difference.

Our School Council gives pupils the opportunity to represent their classmates and share ideas about how we can continue to make our school an even better place to learn and play. The council is led by Mrs Cook, who supports pupils in developing their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.

Each year, children who wish to become a School Council representative nominate themselves. They design posters and give a short speech to their class, explaining why they would make a great representative and what they hope to achieve.

Every class then takes part in a democratic vote, using official ballot papers in our very own school polling station. Just like a real election, the votes are counted and verified, and the successful candidates are announced to the school.

Once elected, the School Council meets fortnightly to discuss important topics and share ideas from across the school. Acting as a strong source of pupil voice, the council works closely with staff to help shape school improvement and ensure that every pupil has a say in school life.

In the past, the School Council has discussed a wide range of subjects — including school uniform, the breadth of the curriculum, trips and visits, and break and lunchtimes. Representatives devise questions and discussion points to take back to their classes, collecting views from a wide range of pupils before bringing them to the next council meeting for further discussion.

Through this process, children learn about democracy in action — how to express their opinions respectfully, listen to others, and work collaboratively to bring about positive change.

At Godmanchester Community Academy, our School Council helps every pupil see that their ideas matter and that together, they can make a real difference to the life of our school.
